Quick Tip: How to Draw Facial Expressions to Show Emotion.
Quick Tip: How to Draw Facial Expressions to Show Emotion
FINAL PRODUCT.
Step 1: Head Base
Start by drawing out a simple head shape, an oval for the skull, two ears, a neck and the start of the shoulder. Then we will start placing in the grid that will help us place the facial features. Now draw a vertical line that separates the face in half and make sure either size are about the same width. If one side is obviously wider than the other, adjust them until you are satisfied. Then drawing the eye line and the nose line. For the eye line, simply draw a straight line (Line Segment Tool (\) or Pen Tool (P)) from one top of the ear to the other. For the nose line, draw a straight line from one bottom edge of an ear, to the other. To define the height of the brow line, cut the section between the eye line and top of the skull into three. Only keep the line closest to the eye line and remember it to be your brow line. For the mouth line (that line will define the center/opening of the lips), cut the section beneath the nose line and above the chin in half, draw the line and remember it to be your mouth line.
Step 2: Features Base.
The nose is the one that will help us with all the other facial features. Using the nose line, shape out the nose you want; Narrow, wide, sharp, round, etc. The width of the nostrils is a great way to determine where the inner corners of the eye should begin and where the top lip should start to curl down. And when you cut that width in half, you have a great reference for the temples (they are located on the eye line, started beside the top of each ear).
With the temples created, you’ll also know where the outer corners of your eyes are located; so, with the inner and outer corners determined, you can shape out the eyes. For the mouth you want to make sure to draw the upper lip on top of the mouth line and the bottom lip beneath the mouth line. Finally, for the eyebrows, make sure to have them slightly bowed and that the line is slightly longer both on the inside and outside of the eyes. I then cleaned up the base with the Brush Tool (B), color black, Stroke Weight 0.3pt and the round brush in Illustrator’s default brush panel.
Step 3: Smile
Much like the eyebrows, you want to draw a simple bowed line, the corners going upwards, to define the center line of the mouth and then shape the top and bottom lips to that line. While the eye shape doesn’t change, adding one or two small lines on the outer corners to hint to subtle laugh wrinkles will add to the expression, since when you smile, your cheeks push up.
Step 4: Grin
Here you want to use the smile expression for a base. To make the mouth show some teeth, only move the bottom lip down and draw a new center line that defines the top of the bottom lip. In the newly created gap, draw some small straight lines for the teeth. Make the crinkles beside the eyes more prominent and even add a small bowed line beneath each eye to show the top of the cheeks pushing up.
Step 5: Surprise
All facial features move upwards and become rounder/wider. The brows arch up, like trying to shoot its way up into the hairline and because they do, you want to slightly lift the nose up a bit since the nose moves along with the eyebrows. The eyes are almost completely circular with the add on of the inner corners of the eyes. The mouth is the most expressive feature in this expression. You want to make the mouth less wide, but taller. It helps to create an oval for the mouth opening and then draw the lips around that oval (teeth inside the oval).
Fewer children seen frequenting libraries.
Fewer children seen frequenting libraries.
It was about 3pm-4pm on Tuesday. Roads in a community in Bangkok's Khlong Toei district were more crowded as it was the time when students were walking along the roads, some sitting inside pickup vans to go back home after school. Given a choice, most of them would probably prefer to stay at home or go out for other activities, like playing with their friends or playing sports or online games.
Two girls, however, do something different. They read at a small library in the community - an activity that could be admired by parents and even others who see them.
This, in a way, depicts the country's situation when it comes to reading where few children go to a library outside their study hours while most of the children prefer doing other activities.

"More than 10,000 people live or stay in many communities here in Khlong Toei but less than 1,000 of them are members of our library," Arunee Promma, secretary-general of the Sikkha Asia Foundation, told The Nation during a visit to one of its three libraries in Bangkok. Two other libraries are in other areas, and each of them has about 600-700 members.
Associate Professor Kulwara Chupongpairod, a former lecturer at Srinakharinwirot University, with expertise in library science and story-telling to promote the reading habit in children, said Thai people preferred watching or listening rather than reading as that activity required more concentration. The country also lacked professional librarians as young people preferred other jobs that offered more career growth.
About 10-20 people use the library after school or work in the evening at this library, while during weekends there are 20-30 people, according to Arunee.
Arunee said the majority of the members were children from kindergarten to Prathom 6 (Grade 12), and the foundation had done activities considered enjoyable and interesting for the children such as story-telling, games and rewards to draw more of them to try reading and enter the library.
How To Add Windows 8 Shutdown / Restart Shortcuts To Start Screen, Taskbar And Desktop
How To Add Windows 8 Shutdown / Restart Shortcuts To Start Screen, Taskbar And Desktop
It made sense that Microsoft would’ve wanted to do away with the Start menu, but that didn’t have to imply that all the associated functions and buttons should also be hidden away, too. Traditionally, in Windows, should you want to shut down, restart or log off your machine, you’ll need to first invoke the Charms bar (Win key + C), go to Settings, click the Power button, and only then will you see the options for Shut down and rebooting your machine etc. While this does make sense perhaps on a tablet, which are powered off much less frequently than any PC or laptop, but forcing desktop users to opt for the same path doesn’t make much sense. Luckily, there’s an easy way to power off your machine under Windows 8, and no, it doesn’t involve Alt + F4.
The alternative in consideration involves creating a shortcut with an embedded command to turn off the computer either on Taskbar, Start Screen, Desktop, or any other location of your choice, upon clicking which the shutdown sequence will initiate. For that, navigate to the location where you want to create the shortcut, right-click and go to New > Shortcut.
For location of the new shortcut, enter the following command:
shutdown /s /t 0
Click Next, and name the shortcut as Shut Down (or anything you like).
Now, should you want to pin it to taskbar, right-click the new shortcut and pin it to taskbar, based on your preference. Afterwards, next time whenever you want to turn off your PC, just click the shortcut, and the shutdown process will immediately begin. Alternatively, if you want these shortcuts on your Start Screen, then simply right click on the shortcut and click on Pin to Start.
You may use various switches with the shutdown command in this scenario for different shutdown types. For instance, /r in place of /s operator will reboot instead of turning off the system, whereas /h would put the computer in hibernation. Playing around with these might give your quicker access to certain commands.
